Tables Turned on Young Warhawks
After winning their last two games by a combined score of 13-0, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team had the tables turned on them in a 5-1 loss to Concordia-Wisconsin Wednesday in Mequon. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the 11th ranked Warhawks, who are now 4-2, while the Falcons improve to 3-1-2.
Typically the Warhawks are the team that gets off to a fast start. Wednesday night it was Concordia. The Falcons scored their first goal in just the fourth minute of play.
UW-Whitewater retaliated with five unanswered shots over the course of the next 17 minutes, but was unable to score the equalizer.
The Falcons put a shot on goal in the 23rd minute to break the Warhawks pressure, but Erin Doody(New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was there to make the save.
After a mass substitution, the Warhawks continued to pressure the Falcon defense. Karina Rosales(Batavia, Ill./Batavia) had consecutive shots stopped before Jordan Jackson (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) sent one wide and one high. Finally, in the 39th minute the Warhawks tied the game when Rosales found Brianna Greefkes (West Bend, Wis./West Bend West) for her first collegiate goal.
One minute and ten seconds later the Falcons snagged the lead back on a volley that found that back of the net. Then, on a counterattack, Concordia scored on a breakaway to take a 3-1 lead just before the half.
Concordia scored two more goals in the second half as the Warhawks could never generate much momentum. Even though UW-W outshot CUW 15-13 in the match, the Falcons won the second half battle 8-4. Nine of Concordia's 13 shots were on goal.
This is the first time in ten meetings that Concordia has defeated UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks hold the all-time series advantage 8-1-1.
The Warhawks will look for redemption on Sunday when they host Wittenberg in a 1 pm match at Fiskum Field.
