Tars Edge Panthers, 1-0
WINTER PARK, Fla. (Women’s Soccer) – Rollins and Florida Tech both entered Wednesday’s game looking for a first conference win. After a scoreless first half, the Tars found the back of the net in the 54th minute to capture the victory at Cahall-Sandspur Field at Barker Family Stadium.
Florida Tech (4-3-2, 0-2-2 SSC) failed on a clear attempt in the 54th minute. Rollin’s (4-4, 1-1 SSC) Brenna McKee collected the ball, just inside the 18-yard box, and drove it left side and in the back of the net for the game’s only goal.
Junior goalkeeper Paige Redmon made eight saves in the game, including five in the first half. Two of her saves came on Tars’ breakaways.
In the 51st minute, Rollins’ Mckee found herself all alone with FIT’s Redmon. Redmon charged at McKee, taking the angle away, and blocked the shot with her leg to keep the game tied at 0-0.
In the 72nd minute, Redmon stood her ground once again. The Tars’ Laura Piedrahita broke free for what looked to be Rollins’ second goal of the half. But Redmon charged once again and blocked the shot with her body to keep the deficit at one.
“[Paige] did a very good job in goal,” head coach Fidgi Haig said. “It is nothing new. She is a very intense player, and is always focused and ready to play any position.”
Redmon exited the game as keeper in the 82nd minute, and the came immediately back in--after a uniform change--as an attacker for the final eight minutes.
FIT, unable to find a goal, extended its scoring drought to 327 minutes, with its last goal coming in the 73rd minute of the conference opener at Nova Southeastern on Sept. 15. Chelsea Pushman scored for the Panthers in the 3-1 loss.
The Panthers return home Saturday, Sept. 29 when they host Florida Southern at 1 p.m. Live stats and audio will be available at http://bit.ly/P60qNL.
