Tchilao’s goal powers Beavs by Buckeyeys

September 5, 2016

Corvallis, Ore. – A brilliant golden goal by forward Don Tchilao gave Oregon State a dramatic 2-1 double-overtime victory over Ohio State on Sunday before a season-high crowd of 517 at Lorenz Field.

Tchilao gained control of a loose ball at midfield off the second-overtime kickoff.  He then dribbled around a defender down the left side into the 18-yard box and blasted a 15-foot left-footed laser past keeper Parker Siegfried at 1:00.18, just 18 seconds into the second overtime.

His second goal of the season touched off a wild celebration from his teammates, many of whom sprinted across the pitch from the bench to mob the sophomore from Chandler, Ariz., following the first golden goal of his college career.

“Hassani [Dotson] played me the ball,” off the kickoff, Tchilao said. “I saw a defender coming, I tried to take a touch inside to beat him. When I did that. He poked the ball right in my path.

“Boom, I ran straight, Jordan [Jones] made a run and took a couple defenders with him. I had clear grass ahead of me. I took it, hit it with my left foot and luckily it went in.

“I’ve scored golden goals before but this is definitely the biggest one I’ve scored for Oregon State. It’s a very happy feeling. This is definitely a big one for us.”

The Beavers (3-0-1) thus completed a perfect weekend and finished a season-opening four-match homestand with an unbeaten record. They began the weekend by blanking San Jose State 3-0 on Friday night.

“Don’s goal was a bit of magic,” OSU coach Steve Simmons said. “It was a great response from the break. It was a well-taken goal, off of his non-dominant foot, so hopefully that gives him some confidence going forward.

“The guys wanted to put a signature on this game,” which the team had circled on its calendar in advance, given Ohio State’s legacy of success. “We are always looking for benchmarks and this was a great way to end our homestand.”

The Beavers nearly won in the first minute of overtime but Hassani Dotson’s shot from outside the 18-yard box bounced off the crossbar and over the net. They outshot the Buckeyes 4-0 in the first OT and were rewarded on their first shot of the second OT.

“In overtime I told the team, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing,’” Simmons said. “Sometimes you don’t get the spoils right away, instant gratification, and you have to keep chipping away.”

The Beavers trailed 1-0 at halftime before drawing even at 63:56 on Jordan Jones’ third goal of the season. Freshman David Norman Jr. made a driving run into the box and played the ball to Jones, who beat Siegfried from the left side.

It was the 18th career goal for Jones, a junior from Pacific Grove, Calif. He is now tied with Jason Lensch (1988-90), Fredrik Kummernes (1995-98), Ryan Johnson (2002-05) and Danny Mwanga (2008-09) for eighth place on OSU career scoring list.

“That came off of us putting pressure on the ball,” Simmons said. “We punished a giveaway and we made them pay. Most goals in college soccer, like Ohio State’s goal, are about punishing giveaways.”

The defending Big Ten champion and an NCAA Sweet 16 side in 2015, Ohio State (0-3-0) received eight votes in the most recent NSCAA/Soccer America poll, but was not ranked in the Top 25. It was ranked No. 25 by Top Drawer Soccer.

Ohio State scored the only goal of the first half when Nate Kohl took a through ball, evaded a defender and converted a short shot at 27:30. It came against the run of play; the Beavers outshot the Buckeyes 6-3 and had far more good scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes.

“We were a bit sloppy and credit to them for taking advantage of the moment,” Simmons said. “They are Big Ten champions for a reason. We knew they were going to dig a trench line and that it would be a hard-fought game.”

The Beavers open the road portion of their schedule at 4:30 p.m. Friday against perennial NCAA powerhouse Akron. The Zips were ranked No. 1 in the country in the Aug. 30 NSCAA/Soccer America poll.

“Akron played on the West Coast this weekend so they have to travel back too,” Simmons said. “Having some experiences at Akron as a coach [while at MAC rival Northern Illinois] I am excited for the players and the opportunity they will have. It’s another chance to see where we are at.”

The Beavers conclude their Ohio road trip against Butler of the Big East at 8 a.m. Sunday, also in Akron. The Bulldogs received 19 votes in the most recent NSCAA/Soccer America poll, but were not ranked in the Top 25.

OSU has never played Akron or Butler since the program’s inception in 1988.

The Beavers conclude a three-game road trip at UNLV on Sept. 17. Their next home game is Sept. 22 against UC Irvine; it will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.

OSU junior forward Timmy Mueller was named to the College Soccer News magazine’s Team of the Week for Aug. 28-Sept. 4. He scored his second career hat trick in a 3-0 win over San Jose State on Sept. 2, OSU’s only game in that span.
