TCU Claims Title, Sweeps Weekend with 1-0 Win Over Hofstra
LUBBOCK, Texas - The TCU women's soccer team completed the weekend sweep, shutting out Hofstra, 1-0, Sunday to win the 2011 Red Raider Classic. The Horned Frogs opened the tournament with a 1-0 blanking of Toledo and was the only squad to go unbeaten in the four-team bracket.
"It's always nice to win a championship, especially on the road," TCU head coach Dan Abdalla said. "Our team played really well and we came out with a lot of energy. We did a great job of fighting back in the second half heat of a Sunday afternoon match. You really get a chance to see what your team is made of when you play these types of games. Our backline and midfielders did a solid job of standing them up and making them work for things. We had eight or nine players contribute a solid group effort defensively."
For the weekend, the Frogs had six players honored as members of the Red Raider Classsic All-Tournament team. Senior forward Jordan Calhoun was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player, while senior Katie Taylor and freshman Alicen Wright were deemed the Defensive MVP and Goalkeeper MVP, respectively. Senior Alex Mechalske, junior Monica Alvarado and freshman Becca Rowland were also recognized for their efforts on the all-tournament squad.
TCU (4-3) enjoyed its third shutout of the 2011 season Sunday, as Wright registered six saves for her second-straight scoreless performance. Taylor led the Frogs' backline also turned in strong defensive efforts, blocking nine Hofstra shots before the ball could reach Wright in the box.
Taylor also paced the Purple and White with four shots in the match, including a pair of strikes on goal, while Calhoun tallied three shot attempts for the day, highlighted by the game-winning attack in the second half.
In the 81st minute, freshman Tori Hale made her way across the field and as she attracted two defenders, the Abilene, Texas product skipped a pass up to Calhoun at the top of the box. From there, the Norman, Okla., native knocked in her second game-winning goal in less than 48 hours. The assist was the first of the year for Hale, collecting her first collegiate point, while Calhoun recorded her 31st career goal.
The Frogs showed their aggressiveness and resiliency in the second period, recording over half of the team's shots in the frame. Taylor initiated the attack, unloading the first attempt of the half inside the opening two minutes. The Escondido, Calif., native rattled off two more shots in a thirty-second span in the 69th minute, with one getting blocked and another saved by the Prides' goalkeeper.
TCU will complete this three-game road swing at Stephen F. Austin Friday. The match is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
