TDS Team of the Week (Nov. 9-16)
GK Chris Hubbard, Notre Dame – After 110 minutes of soccer against Tulsa yielded a 1-1 draw, Notre Dame needed penalty kicks to dispatch the Hurricanes in South Bend. Hubbard rose to the occasion, stopping all three penalties he faced as the Irish won 3-0.
D Andrew Gutman, Indiana – It’s been a good freshman year for Gutman, and the left back delivered the assists on IU’s lone goal of a 1-0 second round win against Connecticut.
D Alex Crognale, Maryland – Virginia didn’t offer much going forward in its second round matchup at College Park, though Crognale barely put a foot wrong as the Terps blanked the defending champions 1-0 on Sunday. The 6-foot-5 center back also was a handful on set pieces throughout the 90 minutes.
D Nick Prasad, Seattle – Prasad picked up an assist when his hopeful long ball forward was misplayed by the UCLA back line, and was poked home by Hamza Haddadi. The Canadian center back then helped keep the Bruins’ potent attack at bay in its 1-0 win at home.
M Stanton Garcia, SMU – The junior midfielder scored the game winner in Sunday’s overtime triumph on the road against Denver, heading home the only goal in a 1-0 win. He also assisted in the team’s First Round triumph against Utah Valley.
M Richie Laryea, Akron – The Zips blitzed Rutgers, scoring five first half goals in a span of 13 minutes. Laryea contribute to half of Akron’s six total goals, scoring twice and setting up another.
M Julian Buescher, Syracuse – Two goals for Syracuse, two assists for the German Buescher, who helped the Orange advance past Dartmouth by a 2-1 score.
F TJ Casner, Clemson – One of the highest scoring games of the second round took place in South Carolina, as the Tigers outgunned Elon 5-2. Casner scored twice, including what turned out to be the winning goal in the second half.
F Amir Bashti, Stanford – Playing the role of super sub, Bashti scored twice from the bench as the Cardinal turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 win at home. The Earthquakes Academy product put the Cardinal in front with a second half goal and then added an insurance tally in the game’s dying minutes.
F Fabian Herbers, Creighton – The German striker had a hat trick of assists as Creighton eased past Drake at home by a 5-1 score. Herbers leads the nation in assists with 15, and is second in the nation in goals scored with 15 tallies.
F Simon Enstrom, Boston College – Only two unseeded teams advanced to the Third Round, and Boston College made it thanks largely to the freshman Enstrom. The forward scored the game winner in both tournament wins, a 1-0 defeat of Vermont and a 2-1 overtime triumph against South Florida.
