TDS Team of the Week: Goalkeeper Heroics
Following a week where goalscorers had the run of headlines, it was actually a goalkeeper who gave the best performance. Hartwick keeper Mateo Munarriz played 90 minutes of flawless soccer to propel the Hawks to a historic 2-0 win over Akron on Saturday.
Munarriz ended the game with 13 saves including an athletic diving effort on a penalty kick to keep the shutout against the prolific Akron attack. For his superhuman performance, Munarriz claimed the TDS Player of the Week honor.
TDS Team of the Week:
GK: Mateo Munarriz, Hartwick – In a historic victory for Hartwick, the junior goalkeeper made 13 saves against Akron to end the Zips 49-match conference unbeaten streak in a 2-0 win for the Hawks. Munarriz also made two saves in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over UMass Lowell to keep a perfect record for the week.
D: Austin Dunker, Elon – The defender had an assist last Tuesday in the 1-0 win over Campbell. He also helped anchor the defense in a 1-0 win on Friday against Appalachian State.
D: Anthony Baumann, Providence – Baumann converted a penalty kick in the second half to help the Friars beat St. John's 1-0 and improve to 2-0 in Big East play.
M: Harrison Shipp, Notre Dame – Shipp showed his quality and class on Saturday in a 2-1 overtime victory for the Irish against Clemson. The senior scored both goals including a well-placed strike in the extra stanza. Shipp also had two assists last week in a 2-0 win over local rival Indiana.
M: Patrick Toh Jr., Houston Baptist(m) – With four points from two games, Toh helped spur HBU to a 2-0 week. The junior recorded the game-winning assist on Tuesday against Oral Roberts in a 2-0 win. He followed that up with a goal and an assist against UMKC(m) on Saturday.
F: Thomas Schermoly, Drake – The junior came off the bench and scored three goals to help Drake bounce back from an 0-1 hole and defeat Evansville 4-1 on Saturday. The super sub found the back of the net with his right foot, left foot, and head on the day.
F: Steve Neumann, Georgetown – The senior striker had three goals in Georgetown’s 8-0 dismantling of Seton Hall on Saturday. Neumann eclipsed the 100-point mark for his collegiate career, which is a remarkable accomplishment that only four Georgetown players have done in history.
F: Christian Okeke, Bradley – Okeke scored his first two college goals this past week and helped the Braves defeat Northwestern 3-2 on the road. Okeke scored the opener and then capped the game with the winner in the first overtime period.
F: Diego Navarrete, UAB – The Chilean scored two goals and added four assists in the 6-2 beat down of Florida Atlantic on Sunday. The previously unbeaten FAU was no match for the skillful and incisive Navarrete who had his way against the defense.
F: Riggs Lennon, Virginia – The freshman from Arizona scored twice on Friday for the Cavaliers in a 5-0 rout of Pittsburgh. It was the most goals Virginia has scored in an ACC game since 2008. Lennon also had the game-winning assist last Tuesday in a 2-1 double overtime victory over VCU.
F: Emil Ekblom, Syracuse – The Orange ran all over the Wolfpack in the ACC tilt on Friday and Ekblom was a major reason why. The freshman had three goals and an assist in the 5-0 thumping. The seven-point performance eclipsed the previous record at the SU Soccer Stadium.
