Telle Nets Overtime Winner
GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Senior Nick Telle's (Union, N.J./Roselle Catholic) game-winning overtime goal propelled the Centenary College men's soccer team to its fifth-straight win as the Cyclones topped Gwynedd Mercy 2-1 on Saturday.
The Cyclones' five-game winning streak is tied for the longest since Centenary joined Division III in 1997. The 2006 squad also won five matches in a row.
Telle, whose overtime winner was the first by a Cyclone since 2011, ripped a shot that hit off the post and deflected across the goal line for his second game-winning goal of the year.
Centenary had taken an early lead as senior Antonio Cabrera (Pasadena, Texas/Pasadena Memorial) collected the ball amid a scramble following a corner kick and delivered his first goal of the fall just 1:40 into the match.
Gwynedd Mercy answered with a goal off the foot of Dan Panpresso, evening the score at 1-1 midway through the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Goleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and Griffin net minder Greg Gengaro both came up with crucial saves to keep the game tied until Telle's score in overtime.
Goleman, who earned his eighth victory this season, saw his shutout streak come to an end at 306:46, a new Centenary record. He bested Jason Rogers' previous mark by six minutes. Goleman made four saves, while Gengaro stopped 10 shots for GMU.
Now 5-1 in Colonial States Athletic Conference play (8-5-2 overall), Centenary looks for its sixth consecutive win on Tuesday when it hosts Neumann at 7:00 pm.
