Temple Women's Soccer Remains Unbeaten
ITHACA, N.Y. — Temple women’s soccer defeated St. Bonaventure 1-0 on Friday afternoon to start off the Cornell Classic. The Owls improve their winning streak to six games, and put themselves one win away from setting the longest streak in school history. Temple now sits tied with the 1991, and 1995 teams for the longest winning streak in program history
Temple started the first half aggressive and outshot the Bonnies 15-2, but couldn’t find the net. Temple found the back of the net early on in the 2nd half at the 54:23 minute mark. On the goal, Kayla Cunningham took a shot from the right side out from about 18 yards. The shot was toward the far side, off the keeper’s fingertips and started a mad dash to the far post by two Temple players and a defender. Paula Jurewicz got to it first and put it in goal for a belated birthday present as Jurewicz turned 21 yesterday. The assist was credited to Kayla Cunningham. The Owls continued the aggression all game and ended the match out shooting the Bonnies 24-5.
“St. Bonaventure was a really organized team, and a different kind of team we faced.” said head coach Seamus O’Connor. “We played very professional today; we got ahead and managed the lead. I am very proud how the team improved on shots on target in the second half. It’s always nice to address an issue at the half and then see your team go out and execute.”
Temple will conclude the classic against host Cornell Sunday at 3:00 p.m. This will be the first meeting in program history between the Owls and Big Red.
The tournament format will award three points for a victory, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. The orders of tiebreakers to declare a champion are head-to-head result, goals scored, then goal differential. An all-tournament team of 11 players will be announced by 6 p.m. Sunday. It will consist of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalie, plus another player of any position.
