Terriers trump Patriots 1-0 with second half goal
SPARTANBURG, SC – After a scoreless first half, it took Wofford College redshirt freshman Maureen Buff just 54 seconds into the second half to score the match’s only goal in a 1-0 win over upset-minded Francis Marion University, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 11) in women’s soccer action.
Buff’s second goal on the season came from 20 yards out and beat the outstretched reach of FMU goalkeeper Lauren Vetock and helped snap a three-match unbeaten streak for the Patriots (3-4-1).
An early opportunity for FMU to score came as the first half wound down. FMU sophomore midfielder Jordan Allen sent a shot on goal in the 41st minute that struck the crossbar.
The Patriots had a flurry of chances in the final three minutes of the match, but Terrier keeper Erika Christensen made saves on freshman Elizabeth Asare’s and junior Rebeccah Hoekstra’s attempts. Freshmen Chanel Harris saw her last ditch effort in the 90th minute sail wide of the net.
Francis Marion held the advantage in the match in shots, 11-7, as well as in corner kicks 3-2. Senior Erin Breen had three of the FMU shots, while Allen and Hoekstra both registered two attempts.
Vetock made two saves, while as Christensen registered the shutout by making four stops and helping the Terriers stay unbeaten at 6-0-0.
Francis Marion is back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 14) when they travel to Charleston Southern University for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
