Tetzke Celebrates Senior Day With OT Winner
MILWAUKEE - Maddie Tetzke scored the game-winning goal at the 92:31 mark of overtime to send the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Youngstown State Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers (14-0-3, 6-0-2 Horizon League) dominated the stat sheet against the Penguins (4-12-1, 0-8-0 Horizon League), but needed Tetzke's heroics to claim the "Senior Day" victory and keep alive their chances at a regular-season league title.
The win ran UWM's unbeaten streak to 17 games, continuing to extend the school record.
"You look at the first half and we score right away and we had numerous chances to put it away and we let them stick around," UWM head coach Troy Fabiano said. "We talked at halftime, that we had to come out and be ready and we were flat. Gave up a corner kick, a great finish for them and now you are chasing the game."
UWM came out of the gates blazing, scoring at the 1:41 mark. Lourdes Onwuemeka came firing down the right wing, with her shot attempt pushed wide by the YSU keeper. Not wide enough, however, as Aubrey Krahn was at the other post to clean it up and make it 1-0 with her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
It looked like the floodgates would open, but Penguin goalkeeper Kylee Moffett had other plans. She made a phenomenal 1-v.1 save on Anna Smalley in the ninth minute, one of her 12 saves on the afternoon.
The UWM offense peppered the net with 10 shots in the first 22 minutes, only to see Moffett record six saves. She made another brilliant close-range stop in the 30th minute – again denying Smalley a goal.
Up just 1-0 at the break despite a 15-to-3 advantage in shots, the game was back to even just that fast. Just 66 seconds into the second half, a corner kick was volleyed nicely into the back of the net and the match was tied, 1-1.
The chances kept coming, but the Panthers could never find the back of the net the rest of the period. Cassidy Blanchard sent a header just wide off a free kick from Jen Eberhardy in the 58th minute and it was Blanchard again in the 69th, with another header saved at the post.
Mackenzie Schill found herself on the doorstep after brilliant passes by McKaela Schmelzer and Blanchard, but the close-range shot ended up over the bar in the 78th.
The Panthers last chance came in the 89th minute, but Onwuemeka's on-target header was denied at the post.
Overtime didn't last long. Krahn found Onwuemeka streaking down the left sideline. From there it was a perfect cross to find Tetzke waiting along the back post, finishing with her left foot to set off the celebration.
"I think we panicked a bit in the second half," Fabiano said. "We were able to reorganize ourselves going into overtime and we said 'just settle down, play your game and hopefully things will come'."
The Panthers close out the regular season with a 7-0-2 home record.
For the day, Milwaukee finished with advantages of 26-to-6 in shots, 14-to-3 in shots on goal and 9-to-4 in corner kicks.
Smalley ended the match with seven shots – five on target – with Blanchard recording four. Mallory Geurts made a pair of saves to record the victory.
Up next, the final game of the regular-season awaits, as the Panthers head to Ohio for a matchup with Cleveland State Saturday. Game time is 6 p.m. and a third-consecutive Horizon League regular-season championship will be on the line.
With other results in the conference today, Milwaukee (6-0-2, 20 points) has jumped ahead of both Northern Kentucky (6-1-1, 19 points after a 1-0 loss to Cleveland State) and IUPUI (6-2-0, 18 points following a 2-1 loss to Oakland).
