Thorpe nets two as King tops Cobras
BRSITOL, Tenn. – For the first time in their last three home games, there was no precipitation falling for the King University women's soccer game as they hosted Virginia Intermont College on Saturday. The Tornado took advantage of the near perfect weather conditions as Rayna Spears gave King the lead in the fourth minute. Rachel Thorpeadded a pair of goals as the Tornado topped their crosstown rivals 3-0.
Spears took a throw in from Keely Easterling and dribbled the ball through the Cobra defense and ripped a shot from the top of the box in the middle of the field. The ball found the back of the net, just out of the reach of the Cobra keeper to put King on top.
The Tornado (2-6) kept the pressure on Virginia Intermont (0-8), and broke through again in the 22nd minute when Bekah Ramstack slid a through ball to Thorpe in the middle of the field. Once she was behind the defense, Thorpe beat the keeper on the right side to extend the Tornado lead to 2-0.
King continued to pressure throughout the rest of the first half, and all of the second half as they outshot the Cobras 25-2 in the contest. Virginia Intermont's best scoring chance came in the 88th minute, but Tornado keeper Morgan Lawsonsmothered the shot to keep the shutout intact.
In the final minute, Thorpe added an insurance goal as she took a pass from Devon Shanklin and ripped her shot from the left side of the net past the keeper to give King the 3-0 win.
Thorpe placed four of her team-high eight shots on net, with two goals while Easterling, Ramstack and Shanklin all registering assists in the win. The Tornado also had seven corner kicks while holding Virginia Intermont to no corners.
King will be in action again when they return to Conference Carolinas play against Limestone College. Kickoff from King's Parks Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
