Three HPU players named All-Conference
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Three High Point University women's soccer players were named to the 2013 Big South All-Conference teams, the league announced on Monday. Senior Taylor Parker was named first-team All-Big South and seniors Kelli Joline and Becca Hemby were both named to the second team.
Redshirt-freshman Kelsey Perrell was also recognized by the conference as a member of the Big South All-Freshman team. In addition to being named second-team All-Conference, Hemby was also named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a member of the Big South All-Academic Team.
"I am very happy for our young ladies who were named to the All-Conference team today," head coach Marty Beall said. "This honor is a representation of the hard work that they have put in throughout the season. I am proud that they have performed at a level this season that the coaches around this conference felt the need to recognize their play."
Parker has started 14 games for High Point this season and has compiled 14 points on five goals and four assists. Parker recorded game-winning goals in back-t-back victories over VMI and Gardner-Webb. The senior posted her first collegiate hat trick against VMI on Sept. 25.
Joline has started all 19 games for the Panthers this season and is tied for the team lead with 15 points on a team-best six goals and three assists. Joline has four goals in conference play, including two against Charleston Southern. She has 30 career goals over four seasons with HPU, tying her for the HPU Div. I career record for goals scored.
Hemby has started all 19 games for High Point this season and has compiled 11 points on three goals and a team-high five assists. The midfielder is tied for fifth in the conference in assists, one behind the league leaders. Hemby leads the Panthers with two game-winning goals, picking them up against Charleston Southern and Campbell.
Hemby is the fourth High Point player to be named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year. It is the third time in four seasons that HPU has had the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Former Panther Brielle Spencer previously won the award in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11.
The senior currently has a 4.0 GPA while majoring in Mathematical Economics. Hemby was named to the 2013 Academic All-Region team and was a 2012 second-team Academic All-American. She is a three-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll Selection and Millis Scholar-Athlete.
"I am very proud that Becca has been named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year," head coach Marty Beall said. "She is an exemplary model for our student-athletes in the High Point University women's soccer program. She is a fantastic leader who has inspired the younger players on the team to follow her example both on and off the field. This being the third time that one of our players has been named the Scholar-Athlete of the year, it really shows how academics are the No. 1 priority of our women's soccer program here at HPU."
Perrell has played in 19 games with 13 starts during her first season with High Point. The redshirt-freshman is tied for the team lead with 15 points on a team-high six goals and three assists. Perrell has four goals and three assists in conference play, including two goals and an assist against VMI and a goal and an assist against Coastal Carolina.
High Point earned the No. 6 seed in the 2013 Big South Women's Soccer Tournament after finishing the regular season with a 6-4-1 conference record. The Panthers picked up a 3-1 win over Longwood on the road in the Big South Quarterfinals on Saturday. HPU will next face No. 2-seed Liberty in the Big South Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m., in Conway, S.C.
