Three Lobos Named NSCAA Scholar All-America
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Three University of New Mexico men's soccer players were named Scholar All-Americaby the NSCAA Wednesday. Senior defender Nick Miele and sophomore midfielder Chris Wehan were named to the first team while senior forward James Rogers was named to the second team. UNM was the only school with two players on the first team, and one of just two programs with three players honored.
“I am extremely proud of Nick, James and Chris," UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said. "They are true student athletes and represent everything Lobo Soccer stands for. Our program strives for excellence in the classroom, in the community and on the playing field. To be one of only two programs in the country with three players named Scholar All-American, and the only one with two named to the first team, is quite an achievement. It says a great deal about the caliber of young men our program attracts and the everyday environment they thrive in."
An Albuquerque native, Miele played every minute of every game for UNM this season. He was named Second Team All-Conference USA for his play. This is his third academic award this season having already been namedAcademic All-District by CoSIDA and Academic All-Conference.
Wehan led the Lobos in goals (10), points (22) and shots on goal (21) this season while being named First Team All-Conference USA and NSCAA All-Region. Like Miele, he also earned Academic All-District honors from CoSIDA. He did not go more than two consecutive games all season without scoring and tallied five goals in UNM's last five games.
Rogers tied for second on the team with 13 points by leading the squad with five assists and finishing third with four goals. He was recently one of just 55 college seniors invited to the MLS Combine in January after finishing his career in the top 10 in program history in points (64, eighth), goals (22, eighth), assists (20, fourth), shots (179, fourth) and starts (74, eighth).
Additionally, senior defender Mathew Gibbons joined the trio in being named Scholar All-West Region, while junior midfielder Josh Dye was named honorable mention.
