Three Tigers score as women's soccer downs St. John Fisher 3-1
PITTSFORD, NY -- Three different Tigers scored as the RIT women's soccer team defeated St. John Fisher 3-1 in non-conference action at Growney Stadium on Monday evening. The Tigers break a three-game losing streak and improve to 3-5-0 on the season.
The Tigers struck first with a goal In the 20th minute. RIT had a free kick opportunity, and were able to convert their chance.
Freshman midfielder Jaimie Lewandowski (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) struck a ball from nearly 30 yards out that sailed past the outstretched hand of Fisher netminder Noel Peck to gie the Tigers a 1-0 lead. For Lewandowski, it was her first goal of her collegiate career.
RIT built on its lead early in the second half after Ashlene Potter (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) sent the ball across the goal mouth and to the feet of Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT/Suffield). Bromson then volleyed a soft ball back across the goal to Kimi Sisti (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads). Sisti didn't waste any time and slammed the ball home from the air.
Later in the half, Fisher had an opportunity on a free kick, Laura Burgstrom had Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) beat high. However, her shot rang off the crossbar keeping the score at 2-0. After the post, a few small scrambles in front of the net produced more opportunities, but the Cardinals failed to capitalize.
Freshman Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) added a third-straight goal for the visitors. In the 60th minute, Kiss collected a long boot and raced to the goal, beating a defender for an uncontested shot at Peck. For Kiss, it was her first goal in a Tigers uniform.
Fisher's lone goal came in the 87th minute on a penalty kick. Fisher was awarded the kick after Heather Konieczny was pushed in the box, and Rohloff buried the penalty shot.
Valenti picked up her fourthe win of the season allowing no goals and making four saves.
RIT returns to action on Friday, September 30 when the Tigers travel to Troy, New York to take on Rensselaer at 4 pm in Liberty League action.
