Three win Patriot League weekly awards
Complete Patriot League Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a 2-0 weekend in Philadelphia, three members of the Lehigh women’s soccer team have won Patriot League weekly awards, as announced on Monday. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Miller was named Goalkeeper of the Week, senior Alyssa Riporti garnered Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore Annika Jansa was named Midfielder of the Week. The Mountain Hawks (2-0-1) earned a 1-0 win at Penn Friday before topping Temple in double overtime Sunday, 2-1.
The award is Miller’s second in as many weeks this season. It’s also her seventh-career weekly award and fifth-career Goalkeeper of the Week honor. This marks Riporti’s first-career weekly award and the second for Jansa. Jansa was also named Rookie of the Week late last season.
Miller continued her stellar play, stopping 12-of-13 shots sent her way over two games. The Commack, New York native tallied a three-save shutout at Penn Friday. All three of her saves came in the game's final 18:13 to help preserve the shutout (and win). It marked her 14th-career shutout (coming in her 20th-career game). On Sunday, Miller tied a career-high nine saves, allowing just one goal. She posted five saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime. One of those stops was a sensational leaping save in the final minutes of the stanza, punching a ball over the crossbar to force a corner kick. Miller now owns a 0.29 goals against average and 0.941 save percentage for the season.
Meanwhile, Riporti was a key anchor of Lehigh's defense, which allowed just one goal in 196:30 over the weekend. The Mountain Hawks pitched a shutout against Penn of the Ivy League Friday night, allowing only 11 shots (just three on goal). Lehigh has now allowed one or fewer goals in 17-of-21 games since the beginning of the 2016 season.
Jansa was superb at both ends of the field all weekend. Among her contributions, she scored her first-career goal, and the game’s only goal, at the 39:12 mark at Penn. She was also part of a defense that’s allowed just one goal all season (in 306:30).
Sophomore Maggie Wadsworth was also recognized with honorable mention laurels. Wadsworth scored the overtime game-winner 6:30 into the second overtime period at Temple.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Thursday when they host Towson at 6 p.m.
