<p>GREELEY, Colo. &ndash; Junior forward Lynn Froetscher snapped a scoreless tie in the 62nd minute to give Colorado College a 1-0 victory over the University of Denver in the opening game of the 2012 Colorado Cup on Friday night.</p> <p>Froetscher, who missed the entire 2011 season after suffering a knee injury during the preseason, knocked in the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Jessie Ayers. It proved to be the third game winner of her career.</p> <p>&ldquo;I was so excited just to be playing again,&rdquo; Froetscher said. &ldquo;I was fortunate to be there to finish the play. That was a great first game back.&rdquo;</p> <p>Freshman goalkeeper Kate Scheele stopped all five shots she faced, including four in the second half, to record a shutout in her collegiate debut. It marked the first time a rookie keeper recorded a shutout in the first game of the season since Geneva Sills blanked the University of Iowa by the same count on Aug. 26, 2005.</p> <p>&ldquo;The defense played well as a unit and the communication was great.&rdquo; Scheele said. &ldquo;Denver definitely put more pressure on us in the second half, but we stayed composed and finished the game very well.&rdquo;</p> <p>The Tigers had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks, but the Pioneers launched nine shots in the second half to finish with a 12-11 edge. &nbsp;</p> <p>&ldquo;It was a tale of two halves,&rdquo; head coach Geoff Bennett said. &ldquo;I thought we were very good in the first half and they were better in the second. Either team could have won 1-nil. In fact, a nil-nil draw probably would have been a good result for both teams.&rdquo;</p> <p>In addition to improving to 13-5-1 against DU, Colorado College ran its all-time record in season openers to 21-7-1 (.732), including a 7-2-0 record under Bennett.</p> <p>&ldquo;To get a quality win like this early in the season is good for us,&rdquo; Bennett said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s a perennial NCAA Tournament team and they don&rsquo;t lose very often.&rdquo;</p> <p>The Colorado Cup continues on Sunday at CC&rsquo;s Stewart Field.</p> <p>DU takes on the University of Northern Colorado at 1 p.m., while Colorado College plays host to defending Cup champion University of Colorado at 4 p.m.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
