Time runs out on Patriots, Navy sneaks by 1-0
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Francis Marion University found themselves on the doorstep with a chance to equal the score late in the match against the United States Naval Academy before eventually dropping the contest 1-0 Sunday afternoon, at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, in Annapolis, Md., in women's soccer action.
FMU (3-8-1) went the first half without getting off a shot before making a strong push in the second frame, especially in the final minutes of the match before time expired after a couple near misses.
Navy (7-3-2) jumped out to their eventual winning margin in the 16th minute of the match when Sam Newhaller headed in a cross from teammate Taylor Batye past FMU keeper, senior Lauren Vetock.
The Patriots found themselves on the verge of pushing the match into extra time a couple times before a shot by junior Rebeccah Hoekstra was denied by Navy goalkeeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw in the 89th minute. The other FMU shot on goal from freshman Elizabeth Asare in the 76th minute, was also turned away by Lopez-Shaw.
Navy outshot FMU 19-4 in the match, and took fiver corner kicks to the Patriots' 2.
Vetock had an impressive day with eight saves, while Lopez-Shaw made two for Navy.
The Patriots are back in action when they visit the Princeton Tigers on October 10 with the match beginning at 7 p.m.
