Toledo Comes Up Short at Miami, 2-0
OXFORD, OH – Toledo came up on the short end of a 2-0 decision against Miami on Sunday in Mid-American Conference action at the Miami Soccer Field. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 5-10-1 overall, 2-5-1 in the league.
"We played well enough to win and created a handful of quality scoring chances," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "The difference between us and Miami today was just a play or two at either end of the field. I thought our defense did well against an extremely potent attack."
The RedHawks (8-6-2, 5-1-2 MAC) took advantage of two second-half goals from Kelsey Dinges to win back-to-back matches against UT for the first time since 2002-03. Miami secured a 1-0 shutout victory over the Midnight Blue & Gold last fall at Scott Park.
Toledo finished today’s cross-division matchup with a slight 12-11 edge in shots over reigning MAC regular-season and tourney champion Miami, including a career-high six off the foot of sophomore Megan Connor. Unfortunately for the Rockets, they were unable to find the back of the frame and suffered their fourth shutout of the season.
The squads played 61 scoreless minutes before MU’s DInges put a shot from 30 yards out past UT sophomore goalie Sam Tiongson to account for the eventual match-winning score. Teammate Jess Bronke was credited with the assist.
Then with only one second remaining in regulation, Dinges knocked home a shot from 10 yards out on a free kick set up by Jenna Weiner to make the final score 2-0.
In between the posts, Tiongson worked all 90 minutes and was called upon to make four saves.
The Rockets return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 25 when they host Ohio. The opening whistle against the Bobcats is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the corner of Hill Ave. and Parkside Blvd.
