Tom Giovatto NSCAA N.Atlantic Coach of Year
Kansas City, Kansas---Seventh-year St. Francis Brooklyn head men’s soccer coach Tom Giovatto was named the North Atlantic Region Head Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Giovatto, along with seven other head coaches who represent their geographic region, will be eligible for National Coach of the Year in their respective divisions. The National Coach of the Year will be announced sometime in mid-December.
“I am very grateful and honored to be recognized for this accomplishment,” commented Giovatto. “This award would not have beeen achieved withouth the hard work of my assistant coaches, players and all of our staff here at St. Francis College.”
This past season, Giovatto guided the Terriers to their first Northeast Conference Championship in fifteen years after the Terriers came from behind to defeat Bryant University, 3-2, in overtime in the championship match. St. Francis Brooklyn claimed the conference’s automatic bid, after becoming the first number four seed to win the championship since 2007. The Terriers took on Penn State in the NCAA First Round.
The 2013 squad posted their fourth double-digit win total under Giovatto and their highest win total (12) under the seventh-year coach. St. Francis Brooklyn ranked 24th in the nation in Save Percentage this season (.817) while ranking in the top-50 in Scoring Offense (1.63), Shutout Percentage (0.37), Team Goals Against Average (0.87), Total Goals (31) and Won-Lost-Tied Percentage (0.658).
Also this year, Giovatto had several of his players receive post-season accolades. Junior forward Kevin Correa, who led the Terriers in every offensive statistical category this year, was named the 2013 Northeast Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player after tallying four goals, two of which coming in the championship clincher off free-kicks. Correa was recently named to his second straight NSCAA All-North Atlantic Region First Team. Junior defender Andy Cormack, who joined Correa on the All-North Atlantic First Team, provided the stability and leadership in the back the co-captain was pivotal all season long. The Plymouth, England native converted the golden goal that sent the Terriers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. He helped anchor a St. Francis Brooklyn defense that gave up just 14 goals during the regular season, the second fewest in the conference and fewest under Giovatto’s seven years at the helm. Senior forward Gabriel Bagot, a three-time All-Northeast Conference selection under Giovatto, finished his Terrier career with 25 goals, the tenth highest total in school history to go along with 63 total points, good for 11th all-time.
