Tornado fall at Erskine 3-0
DUE WEST, S.C. – The King University men's soccer team faced the tough challenge of taking on Erskine College on the road. The Tornado had scoring chances though out the game, but couldn't push a goal across as they fell to the Flying Fleet 3-0.
Ryan Murphy started the attack for King in the fifth minute as he tested the Flying Fleet goalkeeper with a shot that was turned away. Eli Carrasco followed with a shot in the 10th minute, but the attempt sailed just high of the crossbar. Thomas Dube had another chance in the 34th minute, but his shot was saved as well to keep the game scoreless.
Erskine (5-4-1, 3-0 CC) then moved play to the other end the field and Andrew Settlemire gave the Flying Fleet the lead in the 35th minute. He took a pass from Luke Boyce on the goal line and slipped his shot past the goal keeper, giving Erskine the 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way at halftime, and the Flying Fleet continued to pressure King's defense in the second half. Erskine ripped three shots in the first five minutes, but Kari Sveinsson came up with a save on the final shot attempt to keep King (1-7-1, 1-3 CC) within one.
However, Ross Henderson extended the lead to 2-0 when he scored on a free kick in the 69th minute. Settlemire stretched the lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the game in the 75th minute as he took a cross in front of the goal.
The Tornado had a pair of shots saved in the final minutes, but couldn't push one across the goal line as Erskine took the contest 3-0.
The Flying Fleet registered 18 shots to King's nine. However, seven of King's shots were placed on goal. Erskine held the Tornado without a corner kick while taking five of their own in the win.
King will be in action again on Saturday when they host Lees-McRae College at 3:00 p.m., at Parks Field.
