Towson Claims 4-1 Win Over Mount St. Mary's
TOWSON, Md. - Senior Emily Banes scored two goals to lead the Tigers past Mount St. Mary's, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Tiger Soccer Complex.
Banes, junior co-captain Sofia Read and junior Katlyn Axenfeld all scored for the Tigers (2-2). Mount St. Mary's (1-2) got on the board with a penalty kick by Alicia Mirando at 65:08.
"MSM is a team that plays on energy, and we took that away pretty early by winning first balls," said Head CoachGreg Paynter. "Offensively things were clicking for us to get the quality chances that we got."
The first half was all Towson as Read got the Tigers on the board early, beating MSM's keeper low right with a strike from 20 yards at 16:48. Banes added her fourth In three games just about five minutes later with a mirror opposite shot - beating Rachel Bourne low left on a shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box.
Axenfeld contributed her second goal of the season at 57:54 when junior Rhianna Zalewski passed to Axenfeld, whose shot beat Bourne curling away to the right. Mirando's PK temporarily stemmed Towson's offensive output, but Banes capped the afternoon's scoring with a diving header to punch home a cross sent in by Read from the corner kick flag.
Towson returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Navy Invitational against St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m.
