Trine Takes Season-Opener with Shutout
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Trine University women’s soccer team got their 2013 season off on the right foot at home as they shutout Illinois Institute of Technology 2-0.
The young Thunder squad played tough defense in the first half, allowing just three shots by the Scarlet Hawks. With just 12 minutes left in the half, Trine would gain a big advantage as the Illinois Tech goalkeeper was given a red card after pulling down Trine junior Trisha King (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold) on a breakaway attempt.
After neither team scored in the first half, the Thunder finally broke things open in the 67th minute. Junior Eleni Agelopoulos (Munster, Ind./Munster) found sophomore Skyler Reed (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) on a long ball down the right side of the field. Reed then dribbled into the box and found King to her left for a wide open pass to score easily.
Trine wouldn’t waste any time as they scored quickly again less than three minutes later at the 69:30 mark. This time it would be King with the assist as her corner kick found the head of junior Amy Williams (Garrett, Ind./Northrop) who put the ball home for just her second career goal. It was also King’s first career collegiate assist.
Sophomore Sloan Davis (Olivet, Mich./Olivet) earned her first career shutout in the victory while making three saves in net.
On the night, Trine out-shot the Scarlet Hawks 25-6, including using the extra-man to their advantage to hold a 15-3 lead in the second half.
The win marks the second straight season that the Thunder have won their opener, after defeating MSOE in double overtime last year.
Trine returns to the pitch on September 3 when they host Manchester for a 4:00 p.m. game.
