Trio of seniors named All-Patriot League
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following strong 2019 seasons, a trio of Lehigh women's soccer seniors have garnered All-Patriot League honors, as announced on Tuesday. Kayla Arestivo was named first team All-Patriot League for a second straight season while Annika Jansa and Maggie Wadsworth received third-team recognition.
Making a strong impact in the midfield, Arestivo tied for the team lead in goals (2) and points (5) this season, while also playing a key role in the Mountain Hawks' defense which tallied eight shutouts – second in the Patriot League. Arestivo scored goals at Duquesne and home vs. UMBC while assisting on the game's only goal against Holy Cross; Wadsworth scored in the sixth minute to hand the Crusaders their first, and only, league defeat of the season.
Meanwhile, Jansa garnered All-League honors for the first time in her career, despite missing four games due to injury. Anchoring Lehigh's defense at center back, Jansa helped the Mountain Hawks post four consecutive shutouts in September. In total, Lehigh's shutout streak reached 469:36. Lehigh went on to post three shutouts in Patriot League play – vs. Boston University, against Holy Cross and at Colgate.
Wadsworth garnered third team All-League for the second time in her career (also following her sophomore campaign). As a senior, she tied for the team lead (with Arestivo) in goals (2) and points (5). Wadsworth's goals came at big times, scoring the equalizer in the 70th minute vs. Bucknell which helped spark a late three-goal Lehigh run on the way to a 3-1 victory. She also scored in the sixth minute against Holy Cross. Wadsworth's assist came on Arestivo's goal at Duquesne. She is also strong defensively, helping play a role in Lehigh's 0.89 goals against average this year.
The Mountain Hawks ended their season 5-8-5 (3-5-1 in league play), falling just shy of their fourth straight Patriot League Tournament despite actually finishing with one more point than they did last year when they advanced to the league championship game. Two of Lehigh's three league victories came against teams who combined for the last six Patriot League Championships (Boston University and Bucknell) while the third was a 1-0 victory over Holy Cross to hand the Crusaders their first (and still only) Patriot League defeat.
