Trojans edge Patriot Women 1-0
FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Isabella Nunu scored on a rebound off a goalkeeper save for the match’s only score as the University of Mount Olive edged Francis Marion University 1-0, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4) in non-conference women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (0-2-0) will play at Newberry College on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before returning home to host Carson-Newman University on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
Nunu’s tally came in the sixth minute after a shot by Niza Vera was saved by FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Murakami. However, the ball caromed to Nunu who then slotted in a 6-yard attempt.
UMO outshot Francis Marion 13-8, while the Patriots held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Murakami finished with three saves, while FMU freshman Janine Gordon came in as a substitute and posted one save over the 53 minutes.
Senior Stephanie McCoy earned the shutout in goal for the Trojans (1-1-0) as she registered five saves.
The Patriots’ best scoring opportunity came in the 65th minute when junior midfielder Haley Bigler played a ball to freshman Avery Towns who turned and shot from 15-yards out, but her attempt was corralled by McCoy.
Senior Kelly Anthony and freshman Carli Gauthier both recorded two shots to pace FMU.
Mount Olive was whistled for 13 fouls, while Francis Marion committed six fouls.
