Tulsa Battles #25 Loyola Marymount to 1-1
The Tulsa women’s soccer team battled #25 Loyola Marymount to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Friday afternoon in the Sooner Classic at the OU Soccer Complex in Norman, Okla. TU moved to 0-0-1 on the season, while LMU moved to 0-0-1 overall.
“I thought it was a good result,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “Both teams played really well. We didn’t drop off or waiver with what we were doing through all 110 minutes. We got some quality minutes from our subs and younger players, which was a great test to come out in the first game and tie #25 in the country. It shows where we are right now with our program and we turn around and face #24 South Carolina on Sunday.”
The Golden Hurricane’s Tana Dake scored the first goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 32:40 mark, but the Lions countered with their own PK scored by Maddie Medved in the 36th minute.
The teams remained scoreless through the final 78 minutes to end the contest in the tie.
The Lions had a 14-13 lead in shots, while the Hurricane had a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Dake had a team-best three shots, while Valiree Morris, Rachel Thun and Olivia Viergutz all had two attempts. Rebecca Defer logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up four saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, August 21 against #24 South Carolina. Game time is set for 12 noon at the OU Soccer Complex in Norman.
