Tulsa Battles #25 Wisconsin to 2-2 Tie
The Tulsa men’s soccer team battled #25 Wisconsin to a 2-2 double-overtime tie on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. Both teams moved to 0-0-1 on the season.
“I’m pleased with the overall performance, but obviously I’m disappointed that we didn’t get a result,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “Wisconsin is a very good team and are well coached so we knew what we were in for tonight, and although we didn’t get a result, it was a tie between two very good teams.”
Miguel Velasquez was awarded a penalty kick and put Tulsa up 1-0 with 20:49 off the clock, but Isaac Schlenker evened the score in the 42nd minute as he headed in a cross from Chris Mueller. The teams went into the break tied, 1-1.
A missed penalty kick by Zack Stavrou would have given Tulsa the lead again at the 61:43 mark, but Rollie Rocha found the back of the net in the 72nd minute as he drilled in a shot from 20 yards out of a pass from Kay Duit. Tom Barlow tied the score at 2-all at the 76:04 mark as he scored from 10 yards out up the middle.
Neither team found the back of the net for the remaining 14 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods to end the game in a draw.
Juan Sanchez took a team-best six shots, four of which were on goal, for the Golden Hurricane, while Velasquez added four attempts and Munashe Raranje had three. Cooper Clark logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up two saves in his first career contest.
Tulsa had a 21-12 lead in shots, including a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal, while Wisconsin had a 7-6 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 1 against Missouri State. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Springfield, Mo.
