Tulsa Captures 2-1 Win Over Central Arkansas
The Tulsa women’s soccer team captured their first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over Central Arkansas on Friday night in Conway, Ark. The Golden Hurricane moved to 1-1-1 on the season, while UCA fell to 1-2 overall.
“I was very encouraged with the night,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We came out from the opening whistle playing well, but things weren’t going our way and we were unfortunate not to score a couple goals. UCA had a good counterattack and scored a goal, putting us down 1-0 at halftime. We challenged the girls at halftime to accelerate the attack in the second half and they responded well, and that was the difference in the game.”
Autum Schwartz put the Sugar Bears on the board at the 33:15 mark off an assist from Shelby Wilson to give UCA a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Anna Williams evened the score just under two minutes into the second frame as she punched in a rebound attempt that was taken by Tana Dake in the 47th minute. At the 79:02 mark McKenzi McAdams scored the go-ahead goal for the Golden Hurricane with Rachel Thun picking up the assist.
“It was Anna’s first game and first start, so to see her get her first collegiate goal was exciting,” Cussen said. “We used a lot of people tonight and from top to bottom they all gave us good minutes.”
Tulsa had an 18-8 lead in shots, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-1 lead in corner kicks.
McAdams had a team-best five shots, while Dake added four shots, Thun had three and six others had one attempt. Rebecca Defer logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up one save.
Tulsa returns to action against #11 Texas A&M on Sunday. Game time is set for 6:00 pm in College Station, Texas. Fans can watch the game live on WatchESPN. http://www.espn.com/watchespn/index/_/id/2862306/tulsa-vs-texas-am
“We are excited to play Texas A&M in front of probably 5,000 fans because it is one of the best college atmospheres,” Cussen said. “It is also a great chance to play long-time head coach and Tulsa alumni G Guerrieri.”
