Tulsa Contains Ragin’ Cajuns, 3-1
The Tulsa women’s soccer team earned a 3-1 win over Louisiana on Friday night in the Rice Invitational at Holloway Field in Houston, Texas. The Golden Hurricane moved to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Ragin’ Cajuns fell to 1-4-2 overall.
“Overall I am pleased with result,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “Louisiana is a tough team to play against because they are a good counter-attack team so for us to come out in the second half and get three goals and have a lot better possession was good. I am also proud of Kay [Jones] because in her first collegiate game she stopped a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, which was huge because it allowed us to go into the break tied, 0-0, instead of down a goal.”
Reagan Whitlow scored her first goal of the season as she headed in a corner kick taken by Anna Williams at the 52:09 mark. Just under three minutes later Mia Darden added a score for TU as she went one-on-one with Louisiana keeper Mackenzie Lee and scored from inside the 18-yard box.
Gwen Mummert got one back for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the 70th minute as she headed in a shot from just a few yards out.
Williams gave Tulsa a 3-1 lead with her third goal on the year in the 87th minute off a cross from Alijah Oliver.
Williams and Whitlow each had a team-best four shots, while Fabi Miguel added three attempts, and Addyson Guthrie and Oliver both had two. Kay Jones logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up four saves.
Tulsa had a 19-7 lead in shots, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, September 9 beginning at 2:00 pm against Rice in the final game of the Invitational.
