Tulsa Dominates Memphis, 6-0
The Tulsa men’s soccer team concluded the season in dominating fashion with a 6-0 win over Memphis on Saturday afternoon at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn. TU concluded the year with a 6-8-1 overall record and a 3-4 mark in American Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers fell to 4-8-4 overall and 2-3-2 in the league.
“It was a well-earned result after all the hard work the guys have put in in the last 10 days,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We ran with the ball well, our passing was very good and they played collectively. It was important for us and it was a big game for our program to hold ourselves accountable at the end of the season. We didn’t live up to our standards this year, but this proves what kind of program we do have that we didn’t throw in the towel. We came out, worked hard and got the result. We head into the spring knowing we have to get better, but feeling good. I think the team has the right mindset and wants to get better, and I think that has started with the way we’ve been in the last 10 days.”
Thomas Wells put the Golden Hurricane on the board quickly as he finished a cross from Munashe Raranje with just 57-seconds ticked off the clock, and scored again in the 11th minute off a rebound attempt by Jacob Gooden. Gooden scored his own goal at the 29:03 mark to give TU a 3-0 lead at the break.
Miguel Velasquez added a score in the 53rd minute as he drilled in a free kick, and then Chase Bromstedt finished off Tulsa’s scoring with goals at the 65:47 mark and 71:47 mark.
Wells had a team-best five shots, four of which were on goal, while Bromstedt and Velasquez each added three attempts, and senior Zack Stavrou had two shots. Cooper Clark logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
Tulsa had a 19-7 lead in shots, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
