Tulsa Drops 2-0 Decision at Rice
The Tulsa women’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Rice on Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field in Houston, Texas. TU fell to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Owls moved to 2-4 overall.
“I am disappointed with the result, but I am proud of the effort and the way we battled today,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “It was tough circumstances all around with being delayed and not knowing if we were going play today, and Rice is always a tough team to play. We had some good chances, especially in the second half, and played with a sense of urgency in the final 45 minutes. We had six corner kicks in the second half, and if we could have just got one shot to go in it would have changed the momentum of the game.”
The game was delayed two hours due to lightning and inclement weather in Houston.
Annie Walker gave Rice a quick 1-0 lead as she scored from the right side off a combination from Lianne Mananquil and Marissa Topolski just 7:50 into the contest. Dominique Mazero added a score for the Owls in the 26th minute, also off a pass from Mananquil, for a 2-0 advantage for Rice. Neither team found the back of the net for the remaining 64 minutes of the contest for the final 2-0 score.
Rice had a 15-11 lead in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Anna Williams and Mia Darden each had a team-best two shots, while Ashlan Hustava, Emily Brandenburg and Gabriella Borboa all had one attempt. Kay Jones logged 53 minutes in goal and picked up one save, and Mica MacKay had four saves in 37 minutes between the posts.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 14 against crosstown rival Oral Roberts. Game time is set for 7:30 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
