Tulsa Edges Santa Clara, 2-1, in Overtime
The Tulsa men’s soccer team edged past Santa Clara, 2-1, in overtime on Monday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 3-2-2 on the season, while SC fell to 4-3 overall.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game as they’ve won three in a row coming in, are a big, strong, physical team, well organized and good on the counter,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “Our first goal was a result of us counter pressing. We did a good job of pressing after losing the ball. Rollie got it back and it was a great finish on his part. Then Ray played a tremendous ball after winning it, dropped it in and Matt made a good run and a good finish. I’m proud of the guys for getting the ‘w’ and putting together a good performance against a really good team.”
Rollie Rocha put Tulsa on the board first as he picked up the ball at the 18-yard box, split two defenders and shot into the lower left corner with 12:05 ticked off the clock. Jonathan Jarrett evened the score in the 36th minute as he beat a defender and knocked the ball out of the keeper’s reach.
The next 60 minutes ticked off the clock scoreless, including the first five minutes of the first overtime period, but Matthew Puig made a good run and knocked in a ball played by Ray Saari to end the contest.
Santa Clara had a 10-7 lead in shots, but Tulsa had a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Jacob Gooden had a team-best two shots, while five others had one attempt. Jake McGuire logged all 95:30 between the posts and picked up one save.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, September 24 against SMU in the American Athletic Conference season opener. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas.
