Tulsa Ends Year with 6-1 Loss to #18 Memphis
The Tulsa women’s soccer team concluded the 2018 season with a 6-1 loss to 18th-ranked Memphis on Friday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn. The Golden Hurricane fell to 7-10-1 on the season and 3-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers moved to 15-3 overall and 7-2 in the league.
“We played really well in the first half,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We went into the game knowing we had to win so even up 1-0 we didn’t sit back, we knew we needed to keep battling. Giving up the early goal in the second half was tough because knowing we had to win made it feel like we were playing from behind.”
“The team deserves a lot of credit and they don’t deserve this outcome because it is not indicative of this year or program. I am proud of this team and how they have fought all season long. I hate any loss, but especially this one after the team has worked so hard to put us in a position to make the conference tournament and rebound from a tough year last season. It is disappointing to know our season is done, that we won’t have one more practice or one more game with these student-athletes because it has been an enjoyable year.”
Junior forward Anna Williams put TU on the board first as she scored her ninth goal of the season off a pass from Valiree Morris at the 24:30 mark. Tulsa maintained that 1-0 lead at the break.
The Tigers came out in the second half and knotted up the score in the 50th minute as Marie Levasseur hit a long ball into the back of the net. Elizabeth Woerner gave Memphis the go-ahead goal at the 61:34 mark as she played a through ball to the right side. Clarissa Larisey added a score in the 71st minute, while Samantha Murphy scored in the 77th and 82nd minutes, and Beatrice Currie tallied the final goal in the 90th minute.
Williams had a team-best three shots, while three others had one attempt each. Kay Jones logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up nine saves.
Memphis had a 30-6 lead in shots, including a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-0 lead in corner kicks.
