Tulsa Falls to #16 Akron, 2-1
The Tulsa men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to #16 Akron on Friday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 2-2-2 on the season, while UA moved to 5-2 overall.
“We had some opportunities early on in the game to go up certainly one and probably two goals, but we didn’t finish our chances,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “They are a good team and they move the ball well like we do so the game was back-and-forth and fairly open. Both teams possessed the ball pretty well, but unfortunately we got punished for letting guys loose. We let two guys get away from us and they punished us so we have to learn from that.”
Neither team found the back of the net in the first frame, but Shane Wiedt put the Zips on the board as he headed in a free kick taken by Skye Harter at the 64:19 mark. Ray Saari evened the score as he drilled in a penalty kick in the 85th minute, but Ezana Kahsay scored the game-winner for Akron in the 88th minute.
The Zips had a 13-10 lead in shots, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal, and a 2-1 lead in corner kicks.
Rollie Rocha and Jacob Gooden each had three shots for the Golden Hurricane, while Saari added two attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes between the posts and had six saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Monday, September 19 against Santa Clara. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
