Tulsa Tops Santa Clara, 3-2, in 2OT
Munashe Raranje scored two goals, including the game-winning goal in the 101st minute to give the Tulsa men’s soccer team a 3-2 double overtime win over Santa Clara on Thursday night at Stevens Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. TU, which picked up its first win of the season, moved to 1-1-1 on the year, while SC fell to 0-4 overall.
“We started the game really well,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “It is good to get our first win. We could have moved the ball better, but we were pretty solid defensively. We didn’t give up too many good chances in the first half and we scored a great goal, but then in the second half we weren’t good enough. We made some big mistakes and they caught us on a counter. Give our guys credit for fighting back and getting the final two goals. Everyone off the bench was tremendous, they came in, made a big impact and won the game.”
Raranje earned his first goal of the season and second of his career as he one-timed a cross from Thomas Wells with 39:03 ticked off the clock in the first half to give TU a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Miles Robinson evened the score in the 54th minute as he punched in a forward pass from Andres Jimenez, and then nearly four minutes later Robinson crossed the ball to Carlos Delgadillo who scored from six yards out to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Wells got the equalizer at the 74:00 mark off a rebound attempt for his first career goal. Neither team found the back of the net for 27 minutes off the clock, but Raranje dribbled through the defense to score the game winner at the 100:37 mark to end the contest.
Miguel Velasquez had a team-leading four shots, while Rollie Rocha and Raranje each had three attempts, and Juan Sanchez and Harris Partain both had two shots. In goal for the first time this season, Marcel Da Silva played all 100:37 and picked up three saves.
Tulsa had a 20-15 lead in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, September 9 against #1 Stanford. Game time is set for 9:00 pm in California.
