Two First-Half Goals Power Yale Past Fordham
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale turned back the clock for 1990s Throwback Night on Thursday at Reese Stadium. The Bulldogs then went out and played like a team intent on making 2019 a memorable season. Ellery Winkler and Mia Grillo scored first-half goals as Yale rolled to an impressive 2-0 victory over Fordham before another big crowd.
The Bulldogs (3-2) have won three of their last four games with the only blemish a 2-1 loss to Virginia Tech, the No. 23 ranked team in the nation.
“We are really happy with the team’s performance tonight,” said Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “It was great to get a win but also earn a shutout and have contributions from so many student-athletes.”
Yale grabbed the lead at 24:13 when Winkler intercepted a clearing attempt, dribbled in and fired a shot over Fordham goalkeeper Kelly LaMorte’s head. In the first five games of her young career, Winkler, a first year, now has four goals.
The Bulldogs added to the lead before the end of the first half. After some nifty passing, Saje Brar sent a perfect cross into the box that Grillo headed home at 41:35.
Yale had the better of the play for a majority of the second half as well, outshooting the Rams 14-4 over the final 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Fagel made four saves to post the shutout, the Bulldogs’ first of the season.
“We scored two very good goals in the first half, but I thought as the game went on, we were able to have more success, especially in the second half with our re-pressing,” Faherty said. “This performance will give our group more confidence as we continue with our non-conference schedule.”
The 1990’s theme night, along with an excellent turnout of students, made for an excellent atmosphere at Reese.
“Thank you to the Yale Athletics community for coming out to support our program,” Faherty said. “They brought a ton of energy, and it helped our group, especially in the opening half.”
Yale is back on the road on Sunday, making the long trip to Western Pennsylvania to face Robert Morris. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m.
