Two late goals down Patriots 2-0
RADFORD, VA - Mary Wiley bent her own corner kick into the goal to snap a scoreless tie with 3:29 left in the match and Radford University added another goal two minutes later to beat a determined Francis Marion University squad 2-0, Friday evening (Aug. 26) in women's soccer action.
FMU drops to 1-3-0 and will conclude a three-match road swing by playing at USC Upstate on Sunday at 2 p.m. Radford improves to 2-1-0.
Despite being outshot, Francis Marion's defense did not allow a score until Wiley's corner kick in the 87th minute. At the 88:30 mark. Chelsea Hayes picked off an errant FMU ball and side-stepped Patriot senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock to score the other Highlander goal.
Vetock finished the match with four saves as Radford held a 19-1 advantage in shots. However, only six of the attempts were on frame. The Highlanders also led 8-2 in corner kicks.
Freshman Brittney Smith took the Patriots' only shot, an attempt that sailed over the crossbar in the 18th minute.
