Two second-half goals lift No. 11 North Georgia past Clayton State women 2-0
MORROW, Ga. – September 28, 2011 – Facing the No. 11-ranked team in the nation in Division II, the Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team put a valiant effort on Wednesday. However, they came up short in their conquest.
Two second-half goals proved to be the difference as visiting North Georgia topped the Lakers 2-0 in Peach Belt Conference action at Laker Field. Clayton State has now dropped three straight to fall to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the Peach Belt. Meanwhile, North Georgia remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt.
“I thought our girls gave a good account of themselves tonight,” said Clayton State head coach Gareth O’Sullivan. “We gave the No. 11-ranked team in the nation a great game, which is very encouraging.”
Clayton State stayed toe-to-toe with North Georgia in the first half, battling to a scoreless tie. But North Georgia cashed in when needed in the second half.
The Saints got their first goal in the 56th minute when Emily Dover scored from the right side of the penalty box off a Laker deflection. Abby Trevino provided the assist. North Georgia got some needed insurance in the 79th minute when Caroline Wallace scored on a header off an assist by Dover.
North Georgia out-shot Clayton State 11-6 for the game. Laker goalkeeper Laoise O’Driscoll recorded five saves, while her North Georgia counterpart Kirsten Ross had one save.
Clayton State plays host to in-state rival Georgia College in Peach Belt action on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Laker Field.
