UAB Men’s Soccer Falls At No. 7 Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UAB men’s soccer team gave up an early goal and fell to No. 7 Charlotte, 1-0, Friday night.
The 49ers’ Monbo Bokar found the net early in the match in the fifth minute to push Charlotte to a 1-0 lead. That score would hold for the remaining 85 minutes as the Blazers (8-5-1, 3-2 C-USA) moved to 3-2 in league play with the loss.
“Very disappointing game,” head coach Mike Getman said. “In the second half it was one way traffic. We just couldn’t get the ball to go in the net. Give their keeper credit. He was the different tonight.”
UAB outshot the 49ers, 14-13, led by four from Alex Clay. Freddy Ruiz finished with three shots, all three on target, including two in the final six minutes that were kept out of the net by the Charlotte goalkeeper.
Blazer goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky finished with four saves, while Charlotte held the edge in corner kicks, 6-5. With the loss, the 49ers’ advantage in the all-time series moves to 17-9-4, including a 8-3-2 mark in Charlotte.
UAB returns to the pitch next week for its final two home matches at West Campus Field. The Blazers host New Mexico next Wednesday and close the home slate Saturday against Old Dominion.
“We will take a day to recover and then it is on to New Mexico. Having a final four team at home is a big deal. We need a big crowd and a big win.”
