UC Women's Soccer Opens Season With 1-1 Draw

<p><strong>ELON, N.C.</strong> — The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team opened the 2012 season Friday and played Elon University to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Rudd Field.<br /><br />Bearcats freshman forward Laura Rose (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) gave Cincinnati an early 1-0 lead after she scored her first collegiate goal in the 12th minute. The shot came from 20 yards out<br />and occurred against the run of play.<br /><br />Rose and junior forward Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) paced UC with three shot attempts, followed by freshman forward Callie Taylor’s (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) two attempts and junior midfielder Emily Elsbrock’s (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) one.<br /><br />In the third minute of the second half, Elon sophomore midfielder Marrisa Russo pushed a ball from 18 yards out past UC goalkeeper Kristina Utley (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley), who was charging out from the box to make the save. The goal was assisted by Phoenix freshman midfielder Amanda Burch.<br /><br />Utley and her counterpart, Elon junior keeper Catherine Brinkman, each finished the match with three saves.<br /><br />UC did not manage a shot in the two overtime periods. For the match Cincinnati was outshot 10-9. Each team produced four shots on goal. Additionally, the Phoenix took seven corner kicks, while Cincinnati had three.<br /><br />The Bearcats were flagged with a yellow card three times in the match and totaled 12 fouls. Elon was whistled for just three.<br /><br />UC is now 22-10-1 all time in season openers.<br /><br />Cincinnati will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to play the North Carolina State Wolfpack 1 p.m. Sunday at Dail Soccer Field.
