UCSD Falls at No. 9 Cal State Stanislaus
TURLOCK, Calif. - The battle of the last two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s soccer champions went the way of ninth-ranked Cal State Stanislaus, 4-1, Friday night at Warrior Stadium.
In falling to 3-3-3 overall and 2-2-3 in the CCAA, defending champion UC San Diego saw an end to its 30-game unbeaten streak (21-0-9) in regular-season road matches, dating back to 2010. Stanislaus, the 2011 CCAA winner and current North Division leader, remained undefeated at 8-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in league play.
Three-time All-American Karenee Demery struck to the tune of two goals scored and one assist on the night for the Warriors.
With UCSD already down 2-0, junior left winger Kylene Hill cut that deficit in half with a 19th-minute mid-range strike into the upper right corner for her second goal on the year.
Demery completed her brace in the 57th minute, however, with Kirsten Coleman putting the finishing touches on in the 84th. Demery continues to lead the conference in scoring with 10 goals on the season.
The remaining Stanislaus tally came in the 14th minute from Sabrina Williamson on a dipping right-footed shot from outside the penalty area on the left side.
Sophomore Kelcie Brodsky came up with five saves in the UCSD net. Chelsea Lewandowski had to make just one stop for the Warriors.
Stanislaus held a 14-10 shot advantage.
UCSD remains in Northern California to play at Cal State East Bay this Sunday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m.
