UCSD Falls to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 2-0
LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego was unable to generate much offensively in a 2-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women’s soccer action at Triton Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
With the defeat, UCSD dropped back to an even 5-5-3 overall and 4-4-3 in the CCAA. Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 5-6-2 overall and 4-5-2 in league play.
The Toros outshot the Tritons on the night, 18-4, including 11-0 over the first 45 minutes.
Olivia Patterson’s 31st-minute free kick found the lower left corner and opened the scoring. It was the senior midfielder’s third goal on the year and first game-winner.
Despite competing a player down for the final 40:17 due to a red-card ejection, CSUDH managed to double its advantage in the 71st minute. Chula Vista native Melanie DeSalvo found fellow senior Natalie Barbosa on the right wing, with Barbosa’s hard shot squirting through Triton goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky and trickling across the goal line for her second of 2013.
Brodsky had four saves for the Tritons, while fellow sophomore Jennifer Ackerly needed to come up with just a single stop to earn her third individual clean sheet of the season for the visitors.
UCSD’s first shot did not come until the 55th minute, when freshman forward Jamie Benedetto got part of her body in the way of a right-sided cross from close range, but Ackerly was able to corral the ball out of the air with relative ease.
UCSD continues a season-long six-match homestand this Sunday, Oct. 20, against a fourth successive South Division opponent in Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is slated for 2 p.m., following the men’s game at 11:30 a.m.
Triton Notes: UCSD still leads the all-time series, 22-17-5 ... The teams split the 2013 season series, with the Tritons having posted a shutout victory of their own, 1-0, in the earlier meeting in Carson on Sept. 13 ... UCSD had entered the contest unbeaten over its previous nine (6-0-3) against CSUDH since a 2-1 overtime loss in La Jolla in the 2009 regular-season finale ... Jessica Dang drew her first collegiate start, while fellow true freshman Alexis Leon started for the first time since the Sept. 5 season opener with Seattle Pacific.
