UCSD Women Settle for 1-1 Draw With Otters
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Katie O'Laughlin's goal in the 51st minute was cancelled out in the 84th as the UC San Diego women's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match Friday at Triton Soccer Stadium.
The game was played in front of 546 spectators on an incredibly hot October evening as UCSD Athletics kicked off its Homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend.
With the result, UCSD moved to 7-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the CCAA. CSUMB, which entered the contest coming off of three straight losses and as one of two teams still in search of a first conference win, is now 3-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 in league play.
O'Laughlin, a sophomore out of Carlsbad (Pacific Ridge School), put the Tritons ahead through a rather unorthodox goal at the 50:49 mark. She took a couple of dribbles up the right flank toward the sideline, before sending a sliding, seemingly harmless shot on goal. The ball appeared to perhaps wrong-foot the Monterey Bay goalkeeper a bit, ultimately finding a spot in the back of the net in the lower left corner. It was O'Laughlin's fifth goal on the year and was credited as unassisted.
The Tritons couldn't hold onto their slim margin, however, as Regan Porteous accepted a through ball down the right side from Leah Martin and slotted a right-footed shot from the right diagonal into the lower left corner at 83:27 to pull even at 1-1. It was the senior's third goal of 2015 and Martin's first assist.
Kelcie Brodsky finished with four saves in the UCSD net over the 110 minutes of play. Victoria Whyte came up with five for CSUMB, which was out-shot, 21-12.
UCSD had a couple of chances to double its advantage. Sophomore Jordyn McNutt (San Diego/University HS) saw her right-footed shot smack off the crossbar in the 59th minute. Seconds later after an Otter foul, McNutt took the free kick, only for Whyte to go full extension to her left to make an incredible save out to a corner kick.
With under four minutes left, the Tritons' leading scorer, freshman forward Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS), nearly won it for the home side, but Whyte tipped her powerful shot off the crossbar. Two minutes into the first overtime session, junior co-captain Kiera Bocchino's effort from a tough angle on the left side of the penalty area, hit the near post and bounded away. In the 95th, a scrum around the six-yard box netted a shot from Brie Diaz that was blocked away by the contingent of Otter defenders in front of goal, before Reilly sent a rebound over the target.
Bocchino came close to breaking a scoreless deadlock within five minutes after the intermission, going high with her attempt after Whyte could only barely punch away a cross from the right.
CSUMB generated arguably the two best chances of the first half. About 17 minutes in, a right-sided cross looked very dangerous, but sophomore right back Aimee Ellis was well-placed to deny Hannah Kind an open shot on goal. In the 33rd, Porteous took a nice through ball from fellow senior Kristen Womack, but Brodsky was up to the task and made the save from a narrow angle. The Triton senior then later in the 62nd parried a strong right-footed effort by Seana Saladrigas.
UCSD had won each of the first 11 meetings between the sides all-time, out-scoring CSUMB 35-4 in the process. The Tritons had taken two straight 1-0 victories over the Otters and were a perfect 5-0 against them in La Jolla. Monterey Bay was scoreless in the last 502:04 against the Tritons, encompassing four straight shutout losses, prior to Porteous' late equalizer Friday.
UCSD remains at home to face SF State this Sunday, Oct. 11. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m., with the men's teams following at 2 p.m.
