Sept. 16, 2011
CHICAGO - Jesus Torres' goal in the fourth minute of the second overtime vaulted UIC to a 3-2 win over SIUE in men's soccer action in the first round of the Chicago South Loop Hotel UIC Classic.
"It was a game of momentum tonight," SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish said. "It was a very good college soccer game. There were moments when we dictated the play. There were moments when they dictated the play."
The goal was the second of the game for the Flames' freshman. UIC improved to 3-1-2 with the win. SIUE falls to 3-2-1 with the loss.
"It was a good service. (Torres) got right behind us on the back poll," Kalish said of the game-winner.
"At the end of the day it comes down to chances, and they finished their chance," Kalish added. "We had a great chance in overtime and their goalkeeper made a great save."
Senior Jack Twellman would have ended it for the Cougars had it not been for a good save from UIC goalkeeper Piotr Kikolski.
Twellman put the Cougars in front early. His team-leading fifth goal of the season came just 6:18 into the match to make it 1-0 SIUE. The senior got his head on a long throw in from fellow senior Nash Maduekwe.
"Nash is having a good senior season," Kalish said. "He's good in all aspects of the game. He's one of our most consistent players."
Ivan Stanisavljevic evened the score for UIC in the 16th minute. His first goal of the year made it 1-1.
Brian Groark put the Cougars back on top with his first goal of the season with less than five minutes before half. Groark's unassisted goal came from 25 yards out and made it 2-1 heading into halftime.
It was Torres who evened a score the second time for the Flames. Torres made it 2-2 in the 61st minute with an assist by Stanisavljevic.

SIUE will make have to make a quick turnaround, facing the Big Ten's Wisconsin Sunday at 11 a.m.
"It will be a very difficult match to rebound," Kalish said. "These guys are resilient, and I have no doubt they'll step up."
