UMass Sneaks Past Saints in Home Opener
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Rebeca Frisk’s second goal of the afternoon in the 78th minute propelled UMass past Siena Women’s Soccer 3-2 in the Saints’ home opener. Carrie Krohn and Katrina Kurtz both scored for Siena.
An evenly matched, seesaw affair featured a trio of goals within the first 25 minutes, with UMass (3-1-1) claiming an early 2-1 lead. Lauren Bonavita opened the scoring in the third minute, and then set up Frisk’s first score midway through the opening half.
Krohn got Siena (0-5) on the board in the 12th minute, beating her defender down the field on a long service from Sophia Dimkopoulos via Deanna Lomino. The Saints then knotted the score in the 62nd minute on the freshman Kurtz’s first collegiate tally, which she roofed home from 30 yards out off a feed from Emily McNelis.
But with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation, the Minutewomen struck last as Frisk broke loose from a pair of defenders and went top shelf from 40 yards away for the decisive tally.
Each side registered 14 shots apiece, with the Saints holding a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Taylor Dorado made a season-high eight saves for Siena which saw its four-match winning streak in home openers snapped.
Peyton Ryan stopped six shots for a hot UMass squad which was fresh off wins over ACC foe Pittsburgh and Big East opponent Providence.
The Saints conclude their home-opening weekend Sunday when they host reigning Northeast Conference Champion Central Connecticut at 4 p.m.
