UMBC Defeats UCA, 5-0; Wins Tourney Crown
BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore midfielder Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) led an offensive barrage with a goal and two assists as the Retrievers routed Central Arkansas, 5-0, to win the Hampton Inn BWI Kick-Off Classic.
Co-hosts UMBC and Delaware both posted wins over UCA and draws vs. Fairfield, but the Retrievers goal differential was +5 to the Blue Hens’ +1.
Five different Retrievers recorded goals in the contest. After a sluggish start, UMBC got on the board in the 17th minute, as senior forward Michael Scott (Fife, Scotland) headed in sophomore Cormac Noel’s (Todmorden, England) cross from the left side. Scott nudged it just inside the right post from five yards out.
In the 33rd minute, newcomer Darius Madison (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored his first UMBC goal, drilling a diagonal pass from freshman James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) into the far left corner of the goal from 16 yards out.
Leading 2-0 at the half, UMBC again awoke midway through the stanza, scoring twice in a span of 67 seconds. In the 72nd minute, Noel got on the end of passes from Hauck and senior midfielder Malcolm Harris (Damascus, Md./McDonogh) and headed in Harris’ short cross from eight yards out.
Before the Retrievers fans sat down, Hauck, the hero of the 2014 America East Tournament, struck for his first goal of the campaign. UCA turned the ball over deep in the own end and junior striker Kennedy O’Shea (South Riding, Va.) centered the ball, which Hauck re-directed with his back heel and past Bear netminder Harrison Veith from 11 yards out.
In the 85 th minute, junior midfielder Christian Morales (Gaithersburg, Md./Frederick) closed the scoring with a perfectly struck free kick from 22 yards out into the upper right corner.
UMBC scored on five of its eight shots on goal, as Veith made three saves for the visitors. UMBC junior keeper Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa.) posted his first shutout of the year and the ninth in his 18 career starts.
Noel was the other multiple-point scorer for UMBC with a goal and a helper.
Hauck, Heavner, Madison, senior midfielder Joseph Pratt (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) and junior back Bill Kerr (Bowie, Md/DeMatha) earned All-Tournament team honors for UMBC.
The Retrievers co-host another tournament, as UMBC and Navy will welcome Ohio State and Oakland to Maryland in The Westin/Sheraton BWI Classic next weekend. The Retrievers and Buckeyes meet for the first time in soccer and kick off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.
