UMBC Surges Past Wagner, 2-1
BALTIMORE – UMBC women’s soccer extended its unbeaten streak to five and won its third straight game as red-shirt junior Jessy Brown (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) drove home her third consecutive game-winning goal in a 2-1 come from behind victory against Wagner on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.
The streak is the longest for the Retrievers since 2005, which is the last time UMBC won three in a row. The black and gold improve to 5-2-2 on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 6-2-1.
Wagner took the 1-0 advantage in the 57th minute, before UMBC was able to strike twice within a four minute span. Freshman forward Amanda Dailey (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township/Monmouth) sent home the equalizer in the 79th minute and Brown followed with the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
After a scoreless first half, Wagner used a corner kick from Alissa Bianculli to setup Alyssa Willard’s header into the bottom right corner of the net from three yards out to jump out in front, 1-0.
UMBC’s Victoria Burress (Bristow, Va./Patriot) missed out on an opportunity to even the score at one apiece in the 73rd minute, as the freshman forward danced past Wagner’s goalkeeper Katie Marcy, but sent the equalizer wide right.
The Retrievers would have another chance as a slotted pass from freshman midfielder Meg Kowalski (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) setup Dailey for the tap in. The score was the second of the season for the rookie, who returned to the lineup for the first time since Aug. 30.
Less than four minutes later, a free kick from junior back Melissa Hummel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) gave Brown the chance for the header inside the far right post. Brown, who’s three game-winners is the most by a Retriever since 2005, finished with a game-high five shots.
Each netminder finished with three saves in the contest. UMBC senior goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) is one save shy of tying Nadine Henchcliffe as the program’s all-time saves leader.
The Retrievers open a three game road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 25 when it travels to Lafayette. UMBC closes out its non-conference schedule versus the Leopards. First kick is set for 7 p.m.
