UMKC Rolls over Oakland for its Fifth-Straight Win
(Kansas City, Mo.) – Sunday, the UMKC women’s soccer team continued their winning ways with a 2-0 victory over the Oakland Grizzlies to stay undefeated in Summit League action.
With this win, UMKC (6-5-3, 4-0) extended its longest winning streak in team history to five. Also, it’s the first time in team history the ‘Roos have more wins than losses and ties at any point during the season. As for Oakland (4-9, 2-1), it suffered its first conference defeat of the year.
In the first half, during the ninth minute, UMKC got off to a fast start when sophomore forward Taylor Bare connected for her seventh goal of the season. Midfielder’s sophomore Ashley Gann and junior Zaina Mayer were credited with the assists.
As the half continued, the ‘Roos were aggressive throughout as they out-shot Oakland 8-5 going into halftime.
Earlier in the second half, UMKC went up 2-0 when they were credited with an own goal off of a failed back pass by the Grizzlies. Neither team scored again as the ‘Roos held onto win.
When the game ended, both teams were feisty throughout as they combined for 23 fouls and three yellow cards.
Also, junior keeper Jami Finnell recorded her third shutout of the season, but the first resulting in a win. She finished the game with five saves as well.
Next up for the ‘Roos will be their three final home games of the season beginning with South Dakota.
After that, UMKC will face North Dakota State and South Dakota State, both whom are tied along with the ‘Roos atop of the Summit League standings.
