UMKC's Two Opening Half Goals Hold Up for 2-1 Win
(Kansas City, Mo.) - The UMKC women's soccer team made it six victories in a row on Saturday afternoon against South Dakota at Durwood Stadium, scoring two first half goals and holding off a late rally for a 2-1 win.
The Kangaroos (7-5-3, 5-0 SL) also won their fifth straight Summit League game to open conference play, and sit tied for first in the standings. The Coyotes (1-10-3, 1-3-1 SL) were the first team UMKC recorded a tie against in program history in 2009. This time it was the first time UMKC earned a victory over USD.
It didn't take long for the 'Roos to strike, as freshman forward Cecilee Burdge received a through ball from Taylor Bare in the seventh minute that put her in on a breakaway. After a defender got in the way of her first chance at a shot, she cut it to her right foot and put it past the goalkeeper. It was her second goal of the season.
After a few more scoring chances, UMKC got back on the board in the 21st minute after a free kick by Sarah Todd fell into the box for Bare, who tapped it to the right for Laura Creason to finish just 12 yards out. Creason's goal would prove to be the game-winner, and it was also her second on the year.
UMKC out-shot the Coyotes 10-2 in the first period, but the second half saw a more defensive approach give USD more chances. The 'Roos had a 6-5 shot advantage in the final period, though only two South Dakota shots were on frame.
The Coyotes scored to make it 2-1 in the 82nd minute after a turnover in the back was put away by Jenny Teslow on the left side near post.
The Kangaroos will continue conference play at home on Friday night with co-league leaders North Dakota State coming to town. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Durwood Stadium.
