UNF Opens 2012 Season with 4-2 Victory
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In front of a record crowd of 1,056, the University of North Florida used four goals from four different players to claim a 4-2 victory over Siena in the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament to open the 2012 season. The victory was the first home win in the Derek Marinatos Era.
The Ospreys (1-0-0) fell behind 2-1 to the Saints (0-1-0), but UNF scored three unanswered goals to take the match. The two teams were even with five corner kicks apiece. Siena had 18 shots compared to 16 by North Florida, while UNF had seven shots on goal, edging the Saints who recorded six.
Alex Morrell, Teddy Mulamba, Jean Rivaroli and Mauricio Valderruten each scored goals in the match with Morrell and Rivaroli adding assists. Five different Osprey players had multiple shots in the match with Mulamba and Rivaroli each notching a pair of shots on goal.
Captain Brad Sienkiewicz earned the victory, working all 90 minutes between the posts. The transfer allowed a pair of goals while making four saves. Sienkiewicz notched a pair of highlight stops, including punching the ball away at the top of the crossbar.
In the third minute of the match, North Florida took an early lead as Morrell dribbled up the right side of the field and sent a cross to the middle of the box. Rivaroli headed the ball over the goalkeeper's head for the first goal of the 2012 season.
Siena's Falko Friedrichs tied the match with a goal in the 35th minute. Tom Allen's free kick from the left corner of the field was headed to the upper right corner of the goal by Friedrichs to even the match.
The two teams entered intermission knotted at 1-1. The half was played nearly identically by each team. UNF held a slight 8-to-7 edge in shots, while both teams had three saves and corners apiece.
The lead changed hands early in the second half as the Saints' Sindre Ek chipped a ball from a sharp angle on the right side to sneak the ball past the keeper from 15 yards out.
Trailing 2-1, North Florida responded with three goals to claim the victory. Valderruten bent a free kick into the upper right corner of the goal to tie the match in the 63rd minute.
In the 76th minute, the Ospreys regained the lead. Rivaroli took a cross from the right side that was headed into the bottom right corner of the goal by Mulamba. The goal proved to be the match-winner as the UNF defense shut down the Saints offense.
Morrell added an insurance goal in the 85th minute. The ball was deflected around the box, falling to Morrell who finished with a goal in the top right corner of the net.
North Florida returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 26 as the Ospreys continue play in the Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament with a match against Georgia State at Hodges Stadium. The match is slated to kickoff at 3:00 p.m. following the UNF women's soccer match against Gardner-Webb at 12:30 p.m.
