UNI drops season opener to Ball State 2-1
MUNCIE, Ind - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team opened their season this afternoon with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the Ball State Cardinals. The Panthers jumped on the scoreboard first with a 40th minute goal from sophomore midfielder Maggie Riley. Riley was attempting a corner kick and sent it directly into the net for the score, unfortunately that would be the only goal for UNI.
Ball State evened the score at the 48th minute when Michele Blok legged a shot from outside the box into the top left portion of the net. Five minutes later in the 52nd minute Blok would strike again. Once more from outside the box, sending her goal into the bottom left of the net.
Ball State outshot the Panthers 14 to four, including 6 shots on goal. Only two corner kicks were attempted by each team. The Panthers were whistled for 10 fouls while Ball State was called for seven.
Redshirt Freshman goalkeeper Whitney Blunt suffered the loss. Blunt started between the posts for the Panthers and had 3 saves to go with the two Ball State goals against. Blunt was replaced by senior goalkeeper Nicole Postel who turned away one Ball State shot in her one clean half of play.
Brady Clark, Amber Nieland and Annie Dale were the three other Panthers who attempted shots with one each.
The Panthers will stay on the road for their next contest at IPFW on Sunday, August 25. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
